Seestadt Symposium 2024 Day 1
Date: Fri 18 Oct
Times: 5PM-9PM
Location: Maria-Tusch-Straße 22, 1220 Wien, Österreich
Organiser: Wiener Bildungsakademie
We are pleased to welcome you to the Seestadt Symposium 2024, an exciting evening that unites art, urban planning, and ecological sustainability—all within the unique environment of Seestadt Aspern. This event marks the second “International Lab” as part of the Turning the Tide project, an innovative European collaboration that brings together artists, urban developers, and environmental experts to address the urgent challenges of climate change. As cities around the world grapple with environmental crises, Seestadt Aspern stands as a model for sustainable urban development and the integration of ecological principles into city planning.
The evening will open with contributions from various participants, including Marlies Vermeulen and Remy Kroese from the Dutch artist collective Dear Hunter, who will present their groundbreaking cartopological map. This map illustrates the central role of water in the urban landscape, offering a new perspective on how natural resources can be utilized to create more resilient cities.
We are also delighted to welcome Johannes Tovatt, the visionary landscape architect behind the master plan for Seestadt Aspern. He will provide insights into the development of the district over the past decade and reflect on the successes and surprises that arise when planning an entire city district. His presentation will highlight how the Seestadt master plan integrates sustainability and innovation into its design.
Additionally, Astrid Rompolt from Wiener Wasser will discuss the internationally renowned Vienna water supply system and its significance for the city’s environmental strategy. The crystal-clear water sourced from the Alps serves not only as a vital resource for Vienna’s population but also as an example of how sustainable water management can influence urban planning. Her insights will emphasize the importance of protecting natural resources in growing cities.
Throughout the evening, we will explore how art and culture can contribute to raising awareness of climate change and deepening public understanding of environmental issues. Iwona Preis, the driving force behind the Turning the Tide project, will present the initiative and highlight the role of key partner organizations, including Intercult (Sweden), Urban Culture Institute (Poland), Fablevision (Scotland), and Artit (Greece). These organizations are at the forefront of developing creative solutions to the ecological challenges faced by waterfront cities in Europe.
In addition to the fascinating presentations, there will be opportunities for open discussions and networking, where participants can engage directly with the speakers and artists. This is an occasion not only to learn more about the future of sustainable urban development but also to reflect on how collaborative efforts between artists, urban planners, and environmental professionals can inspire new approaches to climate action.
We warmly invite you to this dynamic event at Kunstraum Seestadt, Maria-Tusch-Straße 22, 1220 Vienna. Together, we will explore the intersections of art, water, and urban development, imagining a more sustainable future for cities worldwide.
