Turning the Tide (TTT) invites artists based in Poland and Greece to apply to the International Residency in Vienna.
Do you want to be part of our transformative initiative addressing the climate crisis in waterfront cities through art? Turning the Tide (TTT) is an ambitious artistic intervention and transdisciplinary dialogue designed to creatively respond to the specific threat of the climate crisis on waterfront cities. The project aims to engage local residents, amplifying unheard voices, and increasing awareness of climate issues in cities located on waterfronts.
Through a collaborative effort across four cities, TTT utilises cultural planning methodology, working with socially engaged artists to lead an international experiment exploring the potential contributions of artists and local communities to the narrative on climate change and climate justice. The TTT project involves 5 partners – Intercult (Sweden), Artit (Greece), Wiener Bildungsakademie (Austria), DEAR HUNTER (Netherlands) and the Urban Culture Institute (Poland) in collaboration with FableVision Scotland and River//Cities network.
RESIDENCY IN VIENNA
Residency in Vienna, Austria will last for 28 days, allowing artists time for cultural mapping, research, and the creation of artistic works.
Artists are expected to produce tangible artistic works that reflect their experiences and insights gained during the residency, and these works will be showcased during the online exhibition as a culmination of the residency.
Artists will be accommodated in designated spaces within the city, fostering a conducive environment for artistic exploration and community engagement.
Residency and Lab dates: 23/9/2024 – 21/10/2024
Artists will be invited to actively participate in online meetings before, during, and after the residency to receive feedback and guidance on their works in progress. Moreover, they will engage in up to four local labs (in their respective country), facilitating artistic and social interactions with the local community and the other selected artists. These labs offer artists valuable opportunities to collaborate, exchange ideas, and gain insights into the cultural and environmental context of Vienna.
The residency will take place in Seestadt, a cutting-edge urban development area in Vienna. Known for its commitment to sustainable living and innovative urban planning, Seestadt features a man-made lake at its centre, sourced from groundwater. This area exemplifies modern architectural and environmental design, with extensive green spaces, mixed-use buildings, and community-focused amenities. Artists’ projects will delve into themes connected to Seestadt’s unique environment, infrastructure, and social fabric, reflecting the neighbourhood’s forward-thinking ethos and its interaction with natural elements.
Artists will live in Seestadt during the residency, ensuring their work is deeply connected to the area. The theme of their work must relate to Seestadt in some form, integrating its distinct characteristics and fostering a profound connection between their art and the local setting. This immersive experience will enable artists to draw inspiration directly from their surroundings and contribute meaningfully to the community.
REQUIREMENTS
TTT welcomes professional artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, including but not limited to visual arts, performance and multimedia.
Artists are expected to actively engage with local communities, fostering meaningful connections and collaboration. We welcome applications from artists at any stage of their career who can fully commit to the programme of events and processes, and contribute to the public programme of labs.
Previous experience with projects focused on nature, ecology or socially engaged practice will be valued but does not represent a condition for participation.
The format and online platform for the final presentation of artistic works will be determined in collaboration with the curators.
EXPENSES
In exchange for their commitment, artists selected for the Turning the Tide project will receive the following compensation:
- Remuneration covering travel and accommodation during the residency period.
